Marleen had to say...

I really enjoy reading and, after a long drought, have started reading more for pleasure in recent months... turning off that blasted TV!!  I enjoy fiction the most although I do like to read nonfiction that cover psychology, education, spirituality, or fitness.  My favorite book of all time is Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen.  I love her books and wish there were more of them to read.  Another set of favorite books of mine are the James Herriot series of books.

I'm currently trying to read books that are highly recommended from the 20th century.  I feel like I missed out on reading a lot of books because I focused on my education and career.  I have never read Hemingway, Kerouac, or Joyce.  I feel that I need to... Instead of spending time reading books that are just out and are being hyped by Oprah, I'd like to spend more time on these modern classics.

Books of 2008

In 2008, I'm determined to read more books that are on the "Radcliffe Publishing Course Top 100 Novels of the 20th Century" list.  I already have several in the house because my husband was a literature minor in school and kept the books he read throughout his undergraduate years.  I'll update the list below with books I'm reading and note the ones from the Top 100 list with some asterisks (***).

Here is a link to an ALA page with the Radcliffe list (incidently, the ones in bold are banned or challenged books... interesting!):  http://www.ala.org/ala/pio/piopresskits/bbbwpresskit/bannedchallenged.htm

UPDATE 5/27/08 - nearly midpoint of the year, and I've read 3 of my "goal" books (as you can see below + one I read in Dec 07)... but, as we are heading into the summer reading season, I find that I want to read some lighter material.  So, I am currently reading some more recent and less weighty books than from the Radcliffe list.  Had to reread Prince Caspian so that I was ready to see the new movie (very good BTW).  I think I might delve into some Hemingway this summer tho... we'll see.
